Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Wednesday flagged off the construction of Ojota-Opebi link to ease traffic congestion in Ikeja axis.
The 3.89 km bridge, tagged Legacy Project according him was conceived twenty years ago but did not see the light of the day.
It is being commission to make life meaningful for Lagosians, ” it is about the history of Lagos we are re-writing,” he said.
At the flag off, Sanwo-Olu said that there is presently no direct link between Opebi, Maryland and Ojota, that the available road infrastructure that links the axis is also limited in it’s connectivity options, hence the high traffic volume within the axis during peak period which congest the ikeja Traffic network.
He said that there is need to provide innovative solutions to ease the daily gridlock experienced around Opebi, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, Ojota and Mende corridor.
So, the Legacy Project according to him would start from the Opebi end of the road and connect the Odo Iya-Alaro bridge on Ikorodu road, and link with Mende, Maryland and Ojota end, and vice versa.
There will also be an underpass U-turn for Ojota to Ikorodu and Opebi bound commuters.
He said that the project when completed will consistently reduce travel time for Lagos and Ikorodu bound traffic from Opebi and ease the traffic situation at Opebi – Sheraton link road and Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way.
The project is being handled by Julius Berger construction company, and it is expected to be completed in 20months.
Also, the Special Adviser, Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Aramide Adeyoye said the design for the bridges was done by the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure and Ministry of Transport and promised the project would be completed within the stipulated time.
She said at this stage, it is noteworthy to reassure that the administration of Governor Sanwo-Olu is determined to ensure the project does not end up being abandoned as a necessary funding mechanism has been put in place to guarantee it’s timely completion.
